Montana SBIR/STTR Innovation Summit
8:00 AM
MSU TechLink Center
The Montana Innovation Partnership powered by MSU TechLink Center is excited to co-host, with our FAST partners at the New Mexico Arrowhead Center, the 2018 SBIR/STTR Innovation Summit. The federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs invest over $2.5 billion in our nation's small businesses to fund innovative technologies each year!

This important event addresses opportunities for Montana technology-based innovative businesses to connect with the Department of Defense and other funding organizations. TechLink will live-stream keynote presentations and panels with Navy, NASA, Air Force, and prime contractors, and have the opportunity to post questions directly to program managers at the New Mexico event site.

The Innovation Summit presents an opportunity for small technology firms to learn how their innovative ideas or capabilities can be delivered to the Department of Defense and other innovation funders. Michelle Willis of Naval Sea Systems Command will join us in Bozeman to meet privately with researchers and companies to discuss strategies relevant to their technologies.

Tech companies, small businesses, economic development organizations, researchers, faculty, inventors, and students are encouraged to attend the Innovation Summit. The summit will provide attendees with a chance to visit one-on-one with an SBIR program manager and hear panels and presentations from several high-ranking officials. While focused on SBIR/STTR funding, this event will be compelling and relevant for anyone interested in learning how to move their technology or innovation to market.

8:00 AM Registration

8:30 AM Welcome

8:45 AM Keynote

9:30 AM Panel: Working With Primes. Working with an industry partner, or “prime,” on a subcontract can significantly increase your chance of receiving SBIR/STTR funding. Programs like the All Small Mentor Protégé program incentivize partnerships with small businesses for unique contract opportunities. In this panel, leaders from prime contractors and small businesses will discuss the value of subcontracting/contracting, how to approach their organizations to capture these opportunities, and how their organizations can help you increase your innovative capital.

11:00 AM Panel: Beyond SBIR/STTR - Follow on Funding. You are reaching the end of your Phase II award – now what? What is a Phase III and how do you secure funding? This panel will provide an overview of follow-on funding opportunities, touching on other Phase II opportunities, other grant and contract mechanisms, angel and venture funding, and commercialization assistance programs that can help move your technology closer to commercialization. Hear directly from funding organizations on how to identify and navigate commercialization opportunities, leverage SBIR projects, and secure additional capital.

12:00 PM Catered Lunch at TechLink. Good food and networking with Montana tech companies, researchers, and economic development partners

1:00 PM Panel: SBIR/STTR Tips and Tricks. Putting together an SBIR or STTR proposal package can be intimidating (especially if it’s your first time). To further complicate things, each agency has nuances and different processes for proposal development and submission. What resources are available to help you? How do you navigate the process if you are a first-time applicant? Historically, only 15 to 20 percent of SBIR/STTR applications get awarded – this panel will provide tips and tricks to help you be part of that 15 percent.

2:00 PM DoD 19.1/A Topics and one-on-one meetings. Learn about current DoD Topics from SBIR program managers. The afternoon will also provide time for individual companies to meet one-on-one with Michelle Willis of NAVSEA to discuss their innovations and relevant next steps. To schedule a time for your business to meet with Ms. Willis, please email me at techlinksbir@montana.edu or call 406.994.7788.
